Montreal Square: The Social Glue

This poem was written, pro-bono, in support of the residents of Montreal Square, in Romsey Town, Cambridge.

CHS Group (the trading name of The Cambridge Housing Society Ltd) wants to demolish and re-develop the square.

The loss of the square would mean the loss of well-loved homes and valuable green space; the loss of a vision of how housing should be, with space to live, breathe and share.

CHS claims demolition and re-development is needed to fulfil its charitable duty to provide as much social housing as possible. However, it is unclear how much extra social housing would be provided, under CHS’s plans; how much would be ‘affordable’ (ie a little below ‘market’ rents); and how much sold for CHS profits.

When I visited the community, one summer afternoon in 2018, the sense of community, the social fabric, the “social glue” as Cheryl put it, was self-evident.

You can demolish and re-build houses, but a community, once demolished, cannot so easily be re-built.

Italian Splendour was written for the opening, by Maurizio d’Apollonio and Sweet Gill d’Apollonio, in May 2017, of Maurizio Dining & Co on Cambridge’s Mill Road, and read as part of the official opening celebrations.

Waiting For The Evermore was written for the wedding of my own daughter to her very ‘arresting’ police-officer husband, and read at the official ceremony.
